Property Taxes


Tax Collection

Property taxes are collected by the Treasurer's office in two installments. The first installment is due by September 30th and the second installment is due by March 31st. Taxes being collected are for the previous tax year which spans July 1 through June 30.

  • September Payment: This payment is collecting for July 1 - December 31 of the previous year.
  • March Payment: This payment is collecting for January 1 - June 30 of the previous year.
  • Mobile Home Taxes: These taxes are different in that they are collecting for the current year, July 1 - December 31.
  • One tax statement is sent out annualy which contains both of your payment stubs for the year. The statements are generally mailed during the middle of August each year.
Payment
  • Property tax payment can be made by cash, check, e-check, or credit card.
  • You can also pay taxes online at www.iowataxandtags.gov
  • A service delivery fee is charged for payments made by e-check or credit card. This fee is what allows this service to be available to the county.
  • Credit card types accepted are Visa, MasterCard, and Discover.
  • Returned checks will be charged a returned check fee of $25.00 and a certified mail fee. Another fee of $25.00 may also be charged if it becomes necessary for the county Sheriff's department to retrieve items such as vehicle plates.
Delinquency
  • The September payment is delinquent as of October 1.
  • The March payment is delenquent as of April 1.
  • The one exception is if September 30 or March 31 lands on a weekend or holiday. The next business day will be given to pay without penalty.
  • Penalty for late taxes is 1.5% per month calculated on the base tax amount. (IA Code 445.39)
  • A $4.00 cost will be added to any parcels still delinquent as of May. This cost covers the fees associated with publishing the delinquency in a local newspaper. (IA Code 446.10)
  • A tax sale will be held on the third Monday in June each year. This is a public sale of all parcels on which taxes are still delinquent as of the date of the tax sale. (IA Code 446.7)  See tax sale information below.

Annual Tax Sale

  • The annual tax sale will be held on the third Monday of each June as provided for in the Iowa Code, Section 446.7. At this time there will be a public sale of all delinquent taxes.
  • Publication of the date, time, and place of the annual tax sale shall be made once by the treasurer in at least one official newspaper in the county as selected by the board of supervisors and designated by the treasurer at least one week, but not more than three weeks, before the day of sale. (IA Code 446.9)
  • Taxes for a subsequent year may be paid by the tax sale purchaser beginning fourteen days following the date from which an installment becomes delinquent. (IA Code 446.32)
  • A parcel sold on tax sale may be redeemed at any time before the right of redemption expires, by payment to the county treasurer.
  • The redemption amount includes a fee for the certificate of purchase, and interest of two percent per month. (IA Code 447.1)
  • Right of Redemption: After one year and nine months from the date of sale, or after nine months from the date of a sale made under section 446.18, or after three months from the date of a sale made under section 446.19A or 446.19B, the holder of the certificate of purchase may cause to be served upon the person in possession of the parcel, a notice signed by the certificate holder or the certificate holder's agent, stating that the right of redemption will expire and a deed for the parcel be made unless redemption is made within ninety days from the completed service of the notice. Motor Vehicle

  • The Motor Vehicle office is located in the East Treasurer's office. This is the office where vehicle titles and registrations are issued. Hours of operation are from 8:00 a.m. to 4:15 p.m., Monday through Friday.
  • Iowa law requires you to register your motor vehicle with the county treasurer's office in your county within 30 days from the date you establish residency. Iowa registration is required even though your license plates may still be valid in another state.

  • Vehicle renewals can be paid online at www.iowataxandtags.gov

Drivers License

  • The Drivers License office is located in the West Treasurer's office. This is the office where drivers license's are issued. Hours of operation are from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.
  • Written testing is available during the hours of 8:00 to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.
  • Over-the-road skills testing is available on Mondays by appointment only.
